Myofascial Release is a highly specialized stretching technique used to treat patients with a variety of soft tissue problems. When muscle fibers are injured, the fibers and the fascia (a thin tissue that covers all the organs of the body) become short and tight. This uneven stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body, causing pain and a variety of other symptoms in areas you often wouldn’t expect.
There are two main causes of Myofascial pain:
– Skeletal muscles of connective tissues can be compressed or ‘bound down’ by tight fascia
– The myofascial tissue itself can be damaged, often times at a trigger point where a contraction of muscle fibers has occurred
Regardless of the cause, the restricted area or contraction discourages blood flow to the affected area which exacerbates the contraction issue further unless the area is properly treated.
Myofascial release therapy aims to stretch and loosen the fascia and surrounding tissues to move freely thereby decreasing pain and increasing ones range of motion. Hence the term, myofascial release.
